As our Georgia Computes! Project increasingly focuses on middle and high school computer science, as where the real action of gaining/losing interest in computing occurs, the same result keeps popping up. Most students just don’t know what computer science is! This is a different result than the physicists who find that students have elaborate and deeply held misconceptions about the physical world. We find that 9-19 years old in our studies have loosely held, incorrect conceptions of computer science, that are relatively easy to change.
